Learning to Listen: Lectio Divina

Lectio Divina is an ancient, prayerful was to listen to God's voice in the text of the Bible. It is a method of devotional bible reading rooted in praying the Scripture in Christ's presence. It has a four-fold flow.

Lectio - Read the passage and reflect on a word, phrase, idea by reading comparable texts. You will need a study bible for this (the Harper Collins Study Bible is very good).

Meditatio - Read the passage through again, twice more; write down the word, phrase or idea that strikes you most forcibly.

Oratio - Write a brief prayer around this theme or idea.

Contemplatio - Reduce this prayer to a phrase you can repeat throughout the day; let the phrase descend from your head to your heart.
